We are looking for a committed specialist teacher to join a team of twelve other specialists; an ability to work with others in this team is therefore very important. A willingness to contribute to courses at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 is essential. There will be opportunities to teach within the Sixth Form Science courses for a suitable applicant. The structure of the Science curriculum reflects that of the School, being split into a modular framework. Some modules have a cross-curricular theme whilst others are subject specific. Each member of the team takes responsibility for preparing and managing a number of Modules.
The Science area has the facility of nine well equipped laboratories, three preparation rooms, one study room, one computer resource area and is supported by three laboratory technicians. Information and Communication Technology skills and a working knowledge of Science software would be an asset but they are not essential as long so candidates are willing to improve current skills in this area. The School provides considerable technical and professional support to assist in this.
A variety of styles is encouraged in both the planning and delivery of the Science curriculum. We have no set text at KS3 but material from published works has been used in writing the course. In KS4 we are working with the AQA and OCR Examination Boards following GCSE specifications in Science, Additional Science, Applied Science and Separate Sciences. All students study Science in preparation for GCSE qualifications. In the Sixth Form, vocational courses are offered in Applied Science and Health and Social Care, and AGCEs in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology.
The School is a City Technology College and as such does have a bias towards Science, Technology, Mathematics and Business Education. Our students perform excellently in public examinations. In 2007, 80% of our KS3 students achieved Level 6 and above in the Science SAT's. Also 98% of the Year 11 achieved at least two grades A*-C at GCSE. This figure placed us as the top performing Comprehensive School Science department in England. In the Sixth Form we have an excellent success rate in all of our courses, especially Chemistry. Each year we have a number of students gaining places at the Oxford or Cambridge to read for Science related degrees.
We welcome the application of dedicated specialist teachers, keen to contribute to an exciting School.
